Take-or-pay and $22B of deposits. The memory cycle is being pre-sold, not just ridden

Memory has always been the most brutal boom-bust in semis. The interesting question this cycle is whether the contract structure changes that, and there are hard numbers to look at.

Demand is being locked in advance. Strategic customer contracts reportedly cover up to 50% of future revenue, backed by take-or-pay provisions and $22B in upfront customer deposits. Take-or-pay means the buyer commits to volume whether or not they end up needing it, and $22B paid up front is real skin in the game, not a letter of intent. That is a different setup from the classic spot-price memory cycle where demand evaporates the moment it softens.

The growth is off a real base. Micron reported year-over-year revenue growth of 166.98% at a forward P/E of 11.21. Fast growth on a low forward multiple is the market saying it does not believe the earnings are durable. The contract structure is the bull's answer to that skepticism.

Why it matters (allocator lens): the whole debate is whether AI demand plus pre-committed volume breaks the memory boom-bust pattern. If take-or-pay and upfront deposits hold, they smooth the trough and give margin and cash-flow visibility through a heavy capex phase. If AI demand disappoints, contracts get renegotiated and the old cycle reasserts. The deposits raise the cost of walking away, but they do not remove the risk.

So-what for ABC: this is a structural thesis to watch, not a green light. The contracted-revenue story is the reason memory could behave better than its history, but a single high-beta semi name is Beta with cycle risk stapled on. Size it as a satellite, not a core, and keep Cash for the volatility that comes with any AI-demand wobble.

Takeaway: the memory cycle is being pre-sold through take-or-pay and $22B of deposits. That is the number to track, not the day-to-day chip tape.
