Key finding: for the first time in three weeks, a macro thesis is about to be tested by audited company accounts instead of another self-reported survey.
On Friday the US consumer became the market's live variable. July retail sales fell 0.6% month on month to $763.6B, the largest drop since May 2025, against a +0.1% consensus, with ex-autos at -0.3% versus +0.2% expected (source). University of Michigan preliminary August sentiment printed 51.0 against 54.5 consensus and 55.2 prior (source).
Both of those numbers are surveys. Both get revised. This week the same question gets asked of companies that have to count the money. Home Depot reports Tuesday 18 August with consensus EPS of $4.73 against $4.68 a year ago. Target, Lowe's and TJX report Wednesday. Walmart reports Thursday with consensus sales of $186.8B, and the revisions trend into that print is modestly negative. Ross Stores and Deere also report Thursday, BJ's Wholesale on Friday (source, source).
Why it matters: the shape of the results carries more information than the headline.
These companies do not sit at the same point on the consumer's decision tree, and that is the whole value of the week. Walmart and the off-price names benefit when households trade down. Home Depot, Lowe's and Toll Brothers are levered to the big-ticket discretionary decision that gets deferred first, and consumers are already reported to be delaying kitchens, bathrooms and major renovations (source).
That gives two distinguishable outcomes rather than one. A consumer that is simply poorer misses everywhere. A consumer that is reallocating shows up as Walmart and the off-price names holding while the home-improvement names miss. Those look similar in a headline and mean very different things: the second is a composition problem inside a functioning consumer, the first is an income problem.
There is a benchmark that makes any weakness legible. Through late Thursday, 87% of reported S&P 500 companies beat EPS estimates and 68% beat revenue estimates (source). A retail block that comes in materially below that rate would stand out against its own season rather than confirm it.
The variable nobody in this group controls: fuel.
US gasoline averages $4.07 per gallon against $3.16 a year ago (source). That hits these companies twice, once as a drain on the customer's discretionary budget and once as their own logistics cost. Management commentary on fuel is the cleanest available link between the energy story and the earnings story, and it is the part of this week's reporting most likely to be underweighted in the headlines.
So what for an allocator (ABC).
For the Beta sleeve, nothing here justifies a change to a broad-market holding. This week determines whether Friday's rotation into small caps and away from technology was a one-day event or the start of an earnings re-rating, and that is a question you answer by watching, not by pre-positioning. Broad beta already owns both sides of the trade-down.
For the Alpha sleeve, if you hold or are researching consumer names, the honest test to write down before Tuesday is the shape test above, not a price level. Decide now which combination of results would change your view, because deciding after the print is how a thesis quietly becomes a narrative.
For the Cash sleeve, this is the kind of week that pays optionality-holders. Two macro events (FOMC minutes Thursday, flash PMIs Friday) sit on top of five days of company evidence, which is a wider-than-usual distribution of outcomes for a mid-August week.
Takeaway: the market has an opinion about the consumer built entirely on surveys, and this week it gets audited. Watch which retailers miss, not how many.
