Records again, but the tape is now selling good earnings. Risk-on with a quality filter

The indexes printed fresh records again, but under the surface the market did something it has not been doing: it sold the beats.

The headline stayed risk-on. The Dow rose 0.8%, the S&P 500 0.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite 0.5% to new records, extending a prior session where the Nasdaq surged 2.6%, the S&P gained 1.8%, and the Dow added over 900 points. Two strong days in a row, and the index level is not the problem.

But the leadership rotated hard. AMD fell 5%, and was down 8% premarket, even after a record Q2: revenue of $11.54B up 50% year over year and adjusted EPS of $1.66, both above estimates, with data center sales more than doubling. SpaceX dropped 11% on its first public earnings despite a long-term revenue target approaching $1T by 2029. What carried the tape instead was software and consumer: Shopify jumped 18% on a Q2 beat, $3.58B revenue up 34% and GMV of $115.57B up 32%, and Disney rose 3% on a clean profit beat.

And the hedge bid showed up alongside the risk bid. Gold futures jumped 2.2% to $4,245 an ounce on the same day equities hit records, while the 10-year yield ticked up to 4.64% from 4.62% and WTI eased 0.6% to $75.30. Record stocks and record-area gold at once is not a clean risk-on picture.

Why it matters (allocator lens): when a chipmaker prints a record beat and still falls 5%, the market is no longer paying for growth, it is paying for profitability now. That is a repricing of the AI capex trade from "who grows" to "who earns," and it rewards operating leverage over spending narratives. The rotation into Shopify and Disney is that filter in action.

So-what for ABC. On Beta, stay invested, the index is at records and breadth is rotating rather than collapsing, so the trend is your friend. On Alpha, tighten the screen: names that beat and still bleed are telling you the bar is now cash generation, not capex ambition, so favor the profitable compounder over the story stock. On Cash, note the gold move, a hedge bid building into a record tape is the market quietly buying insurance, and there is no reason you cannot hold some of that optionality too.

Takeaway: records with the beats getting sold is a healthier tape than it looks, but only if you own the earners. Ride Beta, sharpen Alpha to profitability, keep Cash as the quiet hedge gold is already bidding for.
