The tape goes into the July jobs report on its best week in months, led by software, with a hedge bid building underneath it. That combination, not the record itself, is the read.
The trend is unambiguously up. Entering Friday the Dow was up 2.7% and the S&P 500 up 2.9% on the week, pacing for their best weekly performance since the week of April 13, while the Nasdaq Composite was up 3.8%, its best since the week of May 4. Futures added to it ahead of the print, S&P 500 futures up 0.3% and Nasdaq 100 futures up 0.6%. The jobs report is expected to show hiring accelerating slightly with unemployment holding at 4.2%, the kind of steady-labor read that keeps the soft-landing frame intact.
Leadership is the quality filter, not the capex story. Atlassian jumped 33% pre-market on strong earnings and guidance, and Cloudflare rose 16% after raising its full-year forecast. Profitable, self-funding software is carrying the tape, which lines up with the week's clearest single-name signal, Palantir's Q2 that paired 93% revenue growth with operating margin up from 25% to 60%. The other side of that same coin is the credit tell: Oracle's default-swap spreads are at record highs on debt-financed cloud capacity. The market is paying up for earners and charging rent on borrowers, inside the same AI theme.
And the hedge bid is the part that keeps this honest. Gold rose 2% to $4,380 an ounce, a two-month high, on the same days equities paced their best week since spring. WTI slipped under 1% to $76.70 amid Strait of Hormuz negotiations, and the 10-year yield eased to 4.66%, down from a 4.75% peak a week earlier. Bitcoin sat flat at $65,100. Yields backing off the highs is the fuel for the equity move; gold at a two-month high into that same move is the market quietly buying insurance. Breadth is also widening beyond tech, with US manufacturing PMI at a four-year high and Caterpillar carrying a roughly $72B backlog, so the rally is not resting on software alone.
Why it matters (allocator lens): a record tape with easing yields and a rising gold price is a risk-on regime that is paying attention. The sell-side frame is still constructive, with index EPS growth pegged near 20% to $325 and targets re-rating higher, but the same week carries a visible counterweight in Oracle's credit spread and a persistent gold bid. This is not a market to fight, and it is not a market to chase without a filter.
So-what for ABC. On Beta, stay invested, the trend is your friend, records with rotating leadership and broadening breadth is a healthier tape than a narrow melt-up. On Alpha, keep the screen tight to profitability and funding source, the week rewarded Atlassian, Cloudflare and Palantir for earning and punished the debt-funded end of the AI trade, so favor the self-funder over the story. On Cash, take the signal gold is sending, a two-month high built under a record tape is cheap optionality against the twin tails the market is watching, an energy shock via Hormuz and systematic leverage into low volatility. You do not have to choose between riding the trend and holding some insurance; this week the market is doing both.
Takeaway: best week since April, led by earners, with gold at a two-month high underneath. Ride Beta, sharpen Alpha to who funds their own growth, and let Cash hold the hedge the tape is already bidding for.
