The record tape idled lower for a second straight session ahead of the July CPI, and underneath the quiet the two things that matter, AI earnings and the bond market, both moved in the market's favour.
The tape drifted, tech led it down. The S&P 500 fell 0.24% to 7,734.77, the Nasdaq 0.55% to 26,459.35 and the Dow 0.16% to 53,889.24, with technology dragging and industrials firmer (Vittarthi). This is the second consecutive down day, but it is a drift, not a flush: index moves under a quarter percent the day before a major inflation print are the market keeping its powder dry, not changing its mind.
Oil re-added a risk premium; yields ignored it. WTI jumped from about $78.72 to roughly $82.3-82.7 as US-Iran peace optimism faded (Forbes), yet the 10-year yield eased to 4.69%. Gold held above $4,400, near $4,396 spot, on the same headline (Yahoo Finance), and the VIX only ticked to about 15.8. The cross-asset picture reads as a geopolitical premium being topped up, not an inflation trend the bond market believes.
After the bell, the AI funding split resolved. Super Micro missed revenue at $11.1B versus ~$11.55B but guided FY27 sales to $65-72B against ~$52.5B expected, and rose about 8% (Seeking Alpha). CoreWeave beat revenue at $2.58B, up 112%, and narrowed its adjusted loss to -$1.03 versus -$1.20 expected, and rose about 13% (CNBC). The self-funder traded on its order book, the financed builder on its improving losses. Demand durability across the AI physical layer got a clean confirmation from two very different balance sheets.
Today's clearing event. July CPI lands at 8:30am ET, consensus +0.1% headline month on month, 3.4% year on year, core 2.5%, with prediction markets leaning slightly cooler (CNBC). The tape has largely pre-traded a friendly print, so the informative variable is the 10-year's reaction, not the headline.
So what for the allocator (ABC). Nothing about a drifting tape and two after-hours AI beats changes the sleeves. Beta stays owned and untouched into the print; there is no edge in trading an index the day before a number the whole market is waiting on. Alpha is where the AI work lives, and the read there sharpened: underwrite self-funders on demand and financed builders on the slope of their losses. Cash keeps its value precisely because gold and a firmer VIX are quietly pricing the two-sided risk the CPI could unlock. Let the yield, not the headline, decide whether any sleeve needs a hand today.
Takeaway: a calm tape into CPI with the AI engine confirming and the bond market shrugging off an oil shock is a market that wants a reason to hold its risk-on posture; the print, and the 10-year's answer to it, is that reason.
