Savings Goal Planner

A savings goal calculator works out the monthly deposit you need to reach a target by a set date. Pick a goal — wedding, car, house down payment, vacation, a big purchase, or a custom amount — enter your timeline, current savings, and an expected return, and it shows the monthly amount to set aside, plus how much investing saves you versus keeping cash.

Why it helps

At 5%, compounding does $1,152 of the work — so you deposit $70 less each month than saving in cash.

Assumes a fixed return and equal monthly deposits, before taxes, fees, and inflation. A projection, not a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I save each month to reach my goal?
It depends on the target amount, your timeline, what you've already saved, and your expected return. The calculator solves for the monthly deposit using the standard savings formula: PMT = (FV − PV×(1+r)^n) × r ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1), where n is the number of months and r the monthly return.
How do I save for a wedding?
Set the goal to Wedding, enter your budget and the months until the date, then add any money you've already put aside. The tool shows the monthly deposit to get there — and how a modest return lowers that amount versus saving in cash.
How much should I save for a car?
Choose the Car preset, set the price you're targeting and your timeline. If you have a trade-in or existing savings, add them as current savings so the required monthly deposit drops accordingly.
How do I save for a house down payment?
Pick the House down payment goal and enter the amount you need up front. Because down payments are usually larger and a few years out, a modest investment return can meaningfully cut the monthly deposit — the comparison shows the difference.
Does investing really lower the monthly amount?
Yes, when the timeline is long enough for compounding to add up. The tool shows the deposit at 0% (pure cash) next to the deposit at your chosen return, and how much you save per month by investing. For very short goals, keep it in cash — returns barely help and add risk.
