What Is a Pip in Forex? (And Why Pip Value Matters)

What Is a Pip in Forex?

A pip is the standard smallest unit of price movement in a forex pair. For most pairs it is 0.0001 — the fourth decimal place — so if EUR/USD moves from 1.1000 to 1.1001, that is one pip. For pairs quoted in Japanese yen, a pip is 0.01, the second decimal place. Pips are how traders measure gains, losses, spreads, and stop distances, and pip value is what turns those movements into money. This guide explains pips clearly and shows why they sit at the centre of position sizing. No signals, just the fundamentals.

Pip, defined

"Pip" stands for percentage in point (or price interest point). It is the standardized increment that lets traders talk about price moves in whole numbers instead of tiny decimals. Rather than saying "EUR/USD rose 0.0025," a trader says "EUR/USD rose 25 pips." It is a unit of distance on the price chart.

  • Most pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD): 1 pip = 0.0001.
  • JPY pairs (USD/JPY, EUR/JPY): 1 pip = 0.01, because yen quotes carry fewer decimals.

Pip vs pipette vs point

Modern brokers quote an extra decimal for finer pricing, and this causes most of the beginner confusion:

  • A pipette (or fractional pip) is one-tenth of a pip — the fifth decimal on most pairs (0.00001) or the third on JPY pairs. When EUR/USD shows 1.10005, that trailing 5 is a pipette.
  • A point is a broker/platform term that can mean the pipette (smallest quoted increment) on many trading platforms — so "100 points" on such a platform may equal 10 pips. Always confirm what your platform means by "point."

The practical rule: count pips at the standard place (fourth decimal, or second for JPY), and treat the extra digit as a pipette.

What a pip is worth: pip value

A pip is a distance; pip value is what that distance is worth in cash, and it depends on the pair and your position size. For a standard lot (100,000 units) of a pair quoted in USD as the second currency (like EUR/USD), one pip is worth about $10. Scale with lot size:

  • Standard lot (1.0): ~$10 per pip
  • Mini lot (0.1): ~$1 per pip
  • Micro lot (0.01): ~$0.10 per pip

Pip value shifts for pairs where USD is not the quote currency, and for gold, indices, and crypto the "pip" or point is defined differently again (covered in a companion article on pip value for gold and indices). The pip calculator handles the conversions so you get the exact cash value per pip for your instrument and lot size.

Why pips matter more than they look

Pips are not just a way to keep score — they are the bridge between your stop-loss and your position size. Your risk on a trade is stop distance in pips × pip value × lots. That means:

  • A wider stop (more pips) at the same risk requires a smaller position.
  • A higher pip-value instrument requires a smaller position for the same risk.

In other words, you cannot size a trade correctly without knowing the pip value. This is exactly why the pip calculator and the position size calculator work together — one gives you the pip value, the other converts your risk budget into lots. For the full logic, see How Much Should You Risk Per Trade? and the position sizing pillar.

A quick worked example

You risk 1% of a $10,000 account ($100) on EUR/USD with a 20-pip stop. Pip value at a standard lot is ~$10, so risk per lot = 20 × $10 = $200. To risk only $100, you size at 0.5 lots ($100 ÷ $200). Change the stop to 40 pips and the same $100 risk means 0.25 lots. The pip is the hinge the whole calculation turns on.

Turn pip discipline into a habit

Knowing pip value is step one; enforcing consistent risk across every trade is the habit that compounds. Liquiditrax auto-journals every MT4/MT5 trade — stop distance, pip value, and real risk — so your sizing stays honest. Join the journal waitlist →

FAQ

What is a pip in forex? A pip is the standard smallest price move in a currency pair — 0.0001 for most pairs (the fourth decimal) and 0.01 for JPY pairs (the second decimal). It is the unit traders use to measure price movement, spreads, and stop distances.

What is the difference between a pip and a pipette? A pipette is one-tenth of a pip — the extra fractional decimal brokers quote for precision (the fifth decimal on most pairs, third on JPY pairs). Count pips at the standard place and treat the trailing digit as a pipette.

How much is one pip worth? For a standard lot (100,000 units) of a USD-quoted pair, about $10 per pip. A mini lot is about $1 and a micro lot about $0.10. The exact value depends on the pair and your account currency — a pip calculator gives the precise figure.

How many pips is a dollar? It depends on your position size. At a micro lot ($0.10 per pip) a dollar is about 10 pips; at a standard lot ($10 per pip) a dollar is a fraction of a single pip. Pip value scales with lot size.

How is a pip different on gold or indices? Gold, indices, and crypto define their smallest increment differently — often as "points" rather than forex pips — so the cash value per move differs. Use a pip/point calculator set to the specific instrument rather than assuming the forex $10-per-pip rule.
